Mercedes SLS AMG

Engine

A 0-62mph time of 3.8 seconds is outstanding, but it's the brutal shove in the back that comes when you flatten the throttle pedal at any speed that's just as impressive. The 6.2-litre V8 has a soundtrack to match, growling and burbling away to add to the excitement.

Handling

The combination of massive tyres (on 19-inch wheels at the front, 20-inch at the back), F1-style suspension and advanced traction and stability systems ensure there's rarely a shortage of grip – even with all that power at the SLS's disposal. The ride is pretty comfortable, too. The steering's good, but it's not the sharpest.

Interior

This is where you pay the price. Those super-stylish gullwing doors are a talking point, but they're awkward to close if you're of average height or below – they also reduce headroom. You may bang your head as you get out, too. The boot demands that you travel light and it certainly isn't suitable for frozen goods – it gets rather hot!

Exterior

Although the SLS is a comfortable cruiser and good around town, that wonderful engine note does have its downside – it's always there. At a cruise, you hear every alteration in throttle opening, while everywhere else it'll either be thrilling or a little irritating. Those big tyres kick up quite a lot of road noise, too.
