Bentley Continental GT

Engine

The Continental GT comes with a choice of three engines, a twin-turbocharged, direct injection V8 with 500bhp, and a mammoth 6.0-litre W12 with either 567bhp or 616bhp. They’re all exceptionally fast and keen to unfurl their awesome power at very low engine speeds. For us, though, the V8’s superior touring range makes it the pick of the bunch.

Handling

The Bentley GT Convertible isn’t quite as good to drive as the Continental coupe; it’s not as adept at soaking up low-speed bumps and you can detect some shimmies through the steering wheel. Elsewhere, though, it’s remarkably supple and poised for such a big, heavy soft-top – in any of the four electronic chassis settings.

Interior

The dashboard is styled to echo the wings of the Bentley badge, which is a charming touch. That itself doesn’t detract from the ergonomics, but the dashboard does have rather too many buttons and the touch-screen infotainment system is hopelessly clunky. Over-the-shoulder visibility isn’t great with the roof down, either, but the seats are wonderfully supportive and the electrically adjustable driving position is spot-on.

Exterior

The W12 engine treats you to a sporty exhaust note when you rev it hard, and settles to a whisper when you’re cruising on the motorway. The V8 doesn’t sound as satisfying, but it’s no more raucous at speed. The fabric roof gives excellent insulation from exterior noises, too. At UK speeds it’s no louder than the coupe when cruising. That’s really impressive.
